stand up
BBC New Comedy Award Winner

BBC New Comedy Award Winner
Over The Lyne (OTL) can still remember meeting Stephen Buchanan for the first time at a gig in Edinburgh about 4 or 5 years ago. A friend of OTL introduced him and said “this guy is going places!” OTL presumed he meant going places in comedy, rather than just the mega bus back to Glasgow. That prediction came true this year when Stephen won the 2018 BBC New Comedy Award.
The “Fun Size” Pride of Scottish Comedy
The Scottish comedy community was united (not a phrase that can NOT often be said) in it’s delight at Stephen’s success. Stephen (who often references his shorter stature “fun size”) is universally liked and respected on the Scottish circuit. He is a real example of a comic who works hard, grafts and crafts his material.
Not just a Stand Up
As well as being a great stand up and all round great guy, Stephen is also a prolific sketch writer and performer. You may have seen some of his sketches on social media. If not then check them out here on BBC Short Stuff

On the 6th of December our headliner is Ray Bradshaw.
Arise, Sir Billy Connolly
Billy Connolly was honoured with a knighthood this week. For Scots, Billy is universally adored. OTL grew up listening to Billy Connolly. OTL remembers parents secretly laughing (despite their official disapproval of his swearing).
When anyone asks OTL about comedy heroes, Billy is always top of the list. The thing OTL loves the most about Billy is his sense of fun. As much as dark comedy, political comedy and satire are important, Comedy should be fun and Billy does fun in abundance. The twinkle in his eye, his cheeky delivery and the enthusiasm he uses to bring his stories to life are without equal. OTL aspires to bring a fraction of the joy and happiness, Billy has brought to the world.
Below are some of Billy’s greatest words of wisdom.

Hope to see you there!
We need to talk about Louis
Posted on Updated on
As fall from grace go, Louis CK’s has been one of the most spectacular. To anyone in the comedy community, the stories about Louis CK’s predilections for masturbating in front of fellow women comedians was well known. The accusations and admission from Louis, has come at what feels like a turning point for women who have previously put up with varying degrees of harassment in male dominated entertainment industries. OTL has not personally been the victim of sexual harassment (probably as OTL is middle aged) however OTL has certainly been patronised, insulted and intimidated by both male and female acts in comedy but not sure that’s so different to anyone in any job.
What does make comedy unique is the “workplace”. How many workplaces are workers openly allowed to drink alcohol? Travel to work (comedy car share) is routine comedians bitching about their job, co-workers, employers and audience. The line between jokes and reality become very blurred. It’s not a very “normal” work environment.
OTL is also hardly surprised that the damaged people that do stand up and make people laugh also can have problems with treating others well and with respect.
OTL also would like women in comedy to be empowered enough to handle creeps on and off stage cause lets face all these revelations aren’t suddenly going to stop all the dysfunctional insecure creeps in the world. .
