Headliner Mark Nelson
After last years runaway success with BGT winner the Lost Voice Guy, Whipman comedy is back!
Now in its 4th year, the Whipman comedy night is back with award-winning Scottish comedian Mark Nelson.
Comedy fans will be familiar with Mark from BBC Scotland radio and TV. He is the regular presenter of the BBC Scotland radio show “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” and often to be seen and heard on radio BBC Scotland’s “Breaking The News”.
Social media watchers may also recognise him from his “News at 3” videos with his political influencer daughter Isla.
Mark will be supported by London based (Cornish man) Matt Price and Northern Ireland’s Paul McDaniel. The night will all be held together with comedy glue by your regular host Jeannie Jones.
BBC New Comedy Award Winner
Over The Lyne (OTL) can still remember meeting Stephen Buchanan for the first time at a gig in Edinburgh about 4 or 5 years ago. A friend of OTL introduced him and said “this guy is going places!” OTL presumed he meant going places in comedy, rather than just the mega bus back to Glasgow. That prediction came true this year when Stephen won the 2018 BBC New Comedy Award.
The “Fun Size” Pride of Scottish Comedy
The Scottish comedy community was united (not a phrase that can NOT often be said) in it’s delight at Stephen’s success. Stephen (who often references his shorter stature “fun size”) is universally liked and respected on the Scottish circuit. He is a real example of a comic who works hard, grafts and crafts his material.
Not just a Stand Up
As well as being a great stand up and all round great guy, Stephen is also a prolific sketch writer and performer. You may have seen some of his sketches on social media. If not then check them out here on BBC Short Stuff

Edinburgh Festival City
The Edinburgh Fringe festival starts on Thursday 2nd August and runs every day till the 26th of August. It is the biggest arts festival in the world and runs alongside the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
There are 1339 comedy shows listed on the Edinburgh Fringe Website. So where to start? Maybe you’ve done extensive research and have a list of your favourite comedians you want to see and you’ve already bought your tickets. If so, then well done you! You can smugly sit back and watch everyone else cluelessly wandering around with no idea who is worth seeing.
Clueless and on a budget
If you are arriving at Edinburgh Fringe clueless and on a tight budget then here’s a few tips! Look for free entry shows like The Free Festival
These are “bucket shows” in which the performer asks for a contribution at the end. If you have enjoyed the show then you something into the bucket. Ticketed shows can be £10 to £30 depending on the comedian. There are many brilliant comedians performing in the Free Fringe so if enjoyed it and can afford to then stick a £5 in the bucket. However if you really can’t afford it then tell the performer how much you enjoyed the show.
If you are short of time and don’t know which performer to see then Compilation shows like Over The Lyne’s “EdinBRA Fringe Comedy” are ideal.
EdinBRA is a resolving line up of female comedians. So a great chance to see 4 different comedians in one hour. There are many other great compilation shows in the Free Festival for example Shaggers, 4 comedians doing sex and relationship material or Pick of the Fringe .
For the kids Huggers, comedians doing bits from their children’s shows (sometimes featuring Over The Lyne’s own Dr Jones Funny Bones).
Money saving tips
Eating out is expensive so why not grab a sandwich and sit outside enjoying the buskers and views of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Save on buses and taxis and get your walking shoes on. The city centre of Edinburgh is relatively small and it is easy to get about on foot (if a little hilly in places!).
Above all enjoy yourself there is no where in the world as exciting as Edinburgh in August (in Over The Lyne’s humble opinion).

It’s less than a week to go till Valentines Day.
Over The Lyne (OTL) can hear the cynical cries of “who cares it’s all a big marketing ploy”.
Of course it is but it is also a great excuse for having a laugh at all things romantic and sexy (with a few bodily fluids thrown in for good measure).
